David Whitwell is quickly becoming one of the most in demand trombonists in New York City. Versed in jazz, orchestral, and new music techniques, he is at home in virtually any musical situation. He is most active as a performer of new works for the trombone, with more than thirty premieres to his name of new works for solo trombone, solo trombone with chamber ensemble and trombone with eletronics and tape.
David is the leader of free jazz group Trio TBD, The Underground Brass (Les Cuivres Sous-Sol) with low brass virtuosi Felix Del Tredici and Chadwick Walther, and the New York Trombone Consort with Joe Barati, Scott Sweeny, Will Lang and Jacob Garchik. He is the trombonist and brass principal of Ensemble Moto Perpetuo (empnyc.org), trombonist for The Cabinet new music ensemble, (whitneygeorge.com) and serves as principal trombonist of the Gateway Classical Music Society (gatewayclassical.org), and the Bermuda Festival Orchestra (bermudafestival.org).
With a love for many periods of music history and a distain for culturally stagnant music, Mr. Whitwell presents solo recitals approximately three times per year, consisting of new works composed for him and works seldom heard in the trombone repertoire. Mr. Whitwell has dedicated his career to the promotion of the trombone as a solo instrument, and in that spirit, the commissioning of new works. Composers from across Europe and the whole of the United States have composed solo works for Mr. Whitwell, and the list grows with every new recital.
